Belaṭṭha Kaccāna
A sugar dealer. On his way from Andhakavinda to Rājagaha he met the Buddha seated at the foot of a tree, and, with his permission, presented a pot of sugar (guḷakumbha) to the monks. When the monks had shared as much of the sugar as they wished, much was left over, and the Buddha asked Kaccāna to throw it into the water. This he did, and the water crackled. The Buddha taught a graduated discourse to Kaccāna who too the three refuges and became a lay disciple.
