The story of the past is the same as that of the Mahāsūva Jātaka (q.v.) It was related in reference to the Buddha’s visit to Verañjā, where, for the three months of the rainy season, he had to live on water and a modicum of the ground flour of roots, because of the evil influence of Māra.
