Nandamāla

An eminent Buddhist monk of Burma in the latter half of the eighteenth century.

He took a prominent part in the Pārupanā-Ekaṃsikā controversy ¹ and was appointed by the king as Head of the Buddhist Saṅgha (Mahādhamma­rājādhirāja).

He wrote the Sāsanasuddhidīpikā.² Bode: op.cit., 73.

¹ When entering the village for alms, monks should cover bothr shoulders with the upper robe (pārupana). “Parimaṇḍalaṃ pārupissāmīti sikkhā karaṇīyā”ti When in the monastery they may arrange their robes over one shoulder (ekaṃsika). This should also be done when approaching a senior bhikkhu to pay respects. Presumably, this was some controversy regarding when or where it was allowable to bare one shoulder (ed.)
