Saṃvara Sutta
1. Saṃvara Sutta.– Listen monks, I will teach about restraint and lack of restraint. There are sights pleasing to the eye, pleasing, delightful, and enticing. If a monk welcomes them, delights in them, and clings to them, he can know that he is falling away from wholesome states.
There are sounds pleasing to the ear … odours pleasing to the nose … tastes pleasing to the tongue … touches pleasing to the body … ideas pleasing to the mind, delightful, and enticing. If a monk welcomes them and clings to them, he can know that he is falling away from wholesome states. This is lack of restraint.
If a monk does not welcome them, delight in them or cling to them he can know that is not falling away from wholesome states. This is restraint. S.iv.79.
